‘Crusoe George’ from Brighton has beaten more than 3,500 artists to the top spot – just two weeks after the site amazingtunes.com went live.
On the day when mega band Radiohead offered their latest album to fans to download for ‘the amount that the fans think its worth’, Crusoe George was in class working hard for his A-levels.
“I didn’t know I had got to number 1,” said Crusoe. “I might have celebrated during break time if I had.
“This is fantastic. I have always wanted to ensure that my music was heard by as many people as possible – and they seem to like it.
“I have been surrounded by music at home all my life – and I have drawn on some of the great sounds that my family love.”
His track ‘Soulful Swing’ incorporates samples from classic jazz and swing musicians from down the decades – including extracts from an old ’78 record Crusoe bought in a second hand shop.
“iTunes is all about selling music that labels want to sell – amazingtunes is all about showing what people can do.” Said Crusoe.
Global music acts, including many household names, are being urged to join a music revolution that is helping unsigned acts around the world.
Founder Paul Campbell believes that Crusoe is the first of many unknown artists that will get their big break thanks to a revolution sweeping through the music industry.
“He’s brilliant – young, fresh innovative and highly talented – all the qualities often overlooked by the record industry.
“That’s why I have worked night and day for three years to help sweep it away.”
Although hailed as ‘iTunes unsigned’ – the site promises to be a haven for battered bands that want to break free and sell their music directly to the public.
“Get out while you still have some integrity – and a modicum of money!” said Paul Campbell – the man behind amazingtunes.com.
“The record industry bleeds most artists dry – before discarding them without a second thought.
“amazingtunes.com was established to give unsigned acts a credible and vital way of getting their music heard and making some money in the process – but it has become obvious that some of the biggest names in the business need help too!
“It has taken us three years to get the technology up and running – and anyone can benefit from it – without paying a penny.” Said Paul.
Geordie Campbell, founder and CEO of the web community, believes that he has struck the right note for unsigned and established acts. He produced a number of hit TV and radio music programmes, including Channel 4’s Big World Café.
He has been a musician in his own right for several decades having been the youngest member of the Musician’s Union and done sessions for the BBC throughout his teens.
He currently plays drums in several bands and orchestras in his native north-east.
Several thousand people are registering to the site every day – and the international interest is growing by the hour.
They expose their wares to millions who can listen to it free online – and earn 70 percent of any download revenues when they are downloaded.
