Aloha rock'n'soul surfers!!!
A few words of explanation about where I come from, that is, who I am... Musically first:
As you will be able to see [I hope] I write in all sorts of "styles"... Hence the name of the band, if I ever put it together [again]: "FREEDOM INC." Maybe with the addition: [BUT UNLIMITED]!!!"??? ;) Dunno...
It's one of my "other" dreams... a true crossover band, capable of more-or-less playing just about anything and really well [anyone can dream, non? ;)]... Minus me, of course... as I don't see myself as a really competent guitarist... :( But hey, those are my songs after all... ;) :)
So, "Freedom Incorporated [almost literally] But Unlimited!": as in truly free to express ourselves, the way we see fit, limited only by our competencies and imagination, not the way the corporates would make you think is the only possibility... with uniform-ness, one bracket style, market research, audience targeting [scary mechanical shite!!] and so on...
Which is where this site comes in: a great opportunity to test the water, as it were!!
Good luck to all the talented people not wanting to sell out to not so talented artists who can't write but want a piece of your creativity for themselves, together with the income it may generate... In the industry it's known, cynically, as "change a word - a third" :( - and various "Spice Girls" of this world are well known for it... As in "better two thirds of something than 100% of nothing, so have a pick - your choice"... GRRR!!!!!!!!!!
Ergo, the liberating side of technology comes into play with sites like this one!! Well bloody done!! And not a moment too soon!! Bring it on, guys!!! Fuck the exploitative barstewards from the corporates, who have nothing to do with the music itself any more - it all seems to be down to the "business models" and "creating boy and gal bands out of thin air", literally creating the mass taste and market!! Of the worst sort, needless to say!!! :(
A few more words about myself: I started with music when my dad died in a car crash at a rally - I was his co-driver and suffered only minor bruises.... 'Must have been 11 or 12 when my mum bought me an old, cheap guitar, then I started collecting old vinyl and began DJ-ing, as a 14 year old, then I started playing in a band, too...
'Started writing when I was 17, coming back from the Adriatic hols - one of those sweet summer loves/fancies, you know... Never stopped, really... And now, it seems, it's about time at least some of those songs come out from my various drawers, you know... Hope you like them.
Now, I am a Philosopher by formal education, a pro-democracy activist in former Yugoslavia, who left as a conscientious objector when the war started, then claimed asylum in the UK and struggled to get it. In the end, I represented myself and won where the pros messed it all up! Proud of it! ;) :)
In the meantime, I finished my studies in London, volunteered for Amnesty International, became a basketball coach level II, progressed as a songwriter and guitarist [I hope] and I am now beginning with an MA course [EU Studies]... I do know a few things about the Balkans but it seems I need to earn a further recognition in that respect, ergo the MA is a must... - if I'm ever gonna get a proper chance in life... At least in the UK...
Wish me luck, please...
And good luck to us all in this pioneering development of the net!!! :)
Influences: Hmmm... Maybe it would be better, having in mind what I just wrote about how I envisage it all, to put it into context with each song I'm gonna upload here...
"SWEET AMBREEN" was recorded at home and it's only a second take, with Stephen Granville singing, me playing the guitars + finger snaps and recording it on an 8 track ana/digi recorder... ;) With someone like Al Jarreau or so in mind...;)
Nothing much there to say, except that he was holding back his huge voice, partly to leave the neighbours in peace, having just come home from work - and partly to preserve my windows intact... :) He has an enormous range and as big a voice as himself in general [6ft 6" etc.]... I used most of it in that song anyhow...
Btw, Stephen put together the backing vocals. It was a sheer pleasure working with this gentle giant!!! Hope we'll be in a full studio soon... ;)
"LULLABY FOR DOMINIK" I wrote for my nephew, sitting in London, unemployed, penniless, when he was born, all jolly and a bundle of joy, in a far away new country, called Croatia... This was what I could and had to give... Written in an afternoon, originally in my mother tongue but then re-sung in English... Hope you'll enjoy Warren's voice and Kim's keys which give it an adult dimension, with all those gentle anticipations... A bit of home-work, as it were, as well...
“A GENTLE ONE” - hmmm... possibly for Sade Adu or Des’ree or George Benson or Al Jarreau or... summat… The female singers I once auditioned for the band all loved it, especially the lyrics... So, hopefully there's something nice in it for many...
As there was for me making it or playing it - always good fun for any group of people that played it in a variety of ways, more jazzy and purely instrumentally or in a more soulful/r'n'b manner with a proper singer...
Recorded live with the weakest of setups one can imagine, from an old PC with an old 8 track sound card and a PC that kept crashing, as overwhelmed... Drums were recorded first, with me guiding the drummer, then stuff was added, bit by bit, track by track, first in someone's loft, then at my place... I was really kinda cool with it all, when it was all glued together... See what you think...
The next one I’ll try to explain a bit is a rock tune I've done with a couple of friends: Warren Fitzgerald on vocals [like the one I mentioned above] and Preston Heyman on percussions.
"MY BELOVED / MOJ DILBERE" is recorded in my living room, acoustic feel intended, simple and elegant [I hope]. An electric guitar put through a sound processor to emulate an acoustic one ['cept the solo], some vocals and percussions. Simple. Imagine it a la Led Zeppelin, the whole band, proper rock sound, heavy drumming etc. Echhh... One day!! ;)
The Bosnian part is a traditional song, with a solo I pinched from "Divlje Jagode" ["Wild Strawberries"], a rock band from ex-YU, now Bosnia, whose rock version was great! I added the second guitar line to it... Warren did a great job singing in Serbo-Croat!! For an Englishman... :) He also wrote most of the lyrics. Bloody nice, too!!! Some additions and editing by me... I also used a couple of lines written by a nice singer I auditioned for the band I had at a time...
"AWAKENING" is something that I wrote as a rock instrumental but the way it was recorded was conditioned by the fact I did it as an exercise whilst doing my digital recording course. On a small MIDI station I quickly programmed a very simple basis [a few loops: drums, percussions, some keys (organ style) and the simplest of bass lines].
Then I asked Colin McNeish [otherwise a bassist] to play some additional keyboards and he kindly obliged, mainly the piano part, a few dabs on the organ...
After that, I added the guitar, driving the melody, the riff and some impro... Nothing much, as I said, done very quickly, Boss GT 5 to my aide, that's all...
Can you hear it as a soundtrack? Who do I ask to play it? Gary Moore or Santana? Maybe Joe Satriani? Hehehe... I wish... ;)
A nice thing happened when we rehearsed it: a band in the neighbouring studio stopped their rehearsal to come in and give us some really cool compliments and at that stage I only managed to explain 2 or 3 parts to the gang... Really cool of them to do that! Made our day!! Thanx whoever you were/are, guys!!
Enjoy if it's your cup of tea... And try to imagine it Gary Moore style, at least initially...
I will try to add more info and songs later. Although, many of them I do not have recorded at all - at least some could find their way to this place, which seems such a promising platform for so many of us, unlikely to have been heard otherwise...
One of them was already "pinched" by a woman [a "lover's rock" diva, with a world number 1 to her credit] I both admired and trusted! After she expressed interest in it, we [her bass player and I] did it for her, gave her the MIDI file and I gave her a cassette - and she ignored me ever since!
Why? Well, to my despair and late discovery, she re-worked it a bit and called it her own... Actually, her boyfriend's and her guitarist's names are put down - allegedly they did it for her - but I do know what happened there... More about it later... Btw, she/her company published it only in Japan, hasn't really followed it up with a proper promotional campaign, so the record hasn't made any money but hey... at least some credit would have been really nice, you know, some acknowledgment of my talents... But oh no... it was too much to ask for...
Please, guys [addressed to the owners of the site]: do not disappoint us, do not try to exploit us, don't become greedy - just continue doing the right thing, as you have started... ;)
Cheers and my best regards!
Goran
