ARTIST Peter Buxton

Peter Buxton

“The journey is more important than the destination,” says Peter Buxton, whose love of travel and music has inspired him to produce an eclectic new CD which will appeal to fans of artists like Transglobal Underground, Baco de Gaia and William Orbit among others. Having decided that the words and music whizzing around his always-buzzing mind deserved a public airing, Peter built a recording studio at his Wiltshire home and financed the pressing of his debut CD Passion for Life, an eclectic and infectious pick ‘n’ mix of trance, world music, funk blues, folk, hip hop, house, techno, and anything else that takes the musical magpie’s fancy. Stand-out tracks include Meeting in the Desert. On a family camel trek through the Moroccan desert, Peter stopped for dinner at a Berber tented camp. As night fell, a band of Gnawa musicians called Ait Faraji came to play, singing soulfully accompanied by metal castanets and the jooj, a four stringed lute. “I had my mini disc on me,” recalls Peter, “and they allowed me to record their songs. They were delighted with the clarity and were intrigued to hear themselves performing, having never heard themselves recorded before.” Back in the studio, the hand claps and vocal phrases were combined with Western drum patterns and bass lines to create a fusion of styles and a celebration of travel. Meanwhile Nanda Devi evokes the mystical traditions of the East. Blues singer Dana Gillespie chants the Gayatri mantra, while Pandeet Dinesh supplies Indian percussion and vocals, whilst Sunset by the River provokes a state of relative stillness and serenity, inspired by an imaginary barefoot walk along the banks of the Ganges. Videos and tracks are available through iTunes, Amazon and on www.peterbuxton.com, from which physical copies of the CD can be ordered, while fans can chat to Peter via www.myspace.com/peterbuxtonmusic.
