My Rocket 88 was a constantly evolving collective fronted by the main songwriter, Rich. gigwise.com Formed partially from the remnants of Cornershop and John Peel faves Garlic, thankfully My Rocket 88 sound nothing at all like tired replicas of their previous incarnations. Instead, as the title track confirms, they’ve crafted a glorious song that owes a lot to the jangly guitar hooks of Strokes and Razorlight, together with a spattering of Pulp’s pop sensibility. Rocksomething.com Throwing both male and female vocals into the mix are London-based indie-rock pentad My Rocket 88. Already creating songs squashed full of vitality and verve, this is a band that have huge potential to reach the big time. Glorious for its entirety, “Times of Trouble” is a song of exceptional quality that is more deserving of chart recognition than nearly everything that can typically be seen flying off the sales racks. It’s a happy trundle that picks up into a cheery hook-laden bounce. Later on, in “This Golden World” My Rocket 88 show their softer side to fine effect also, before hitting it hard again with finale “Sun Soiree”. The varied vocals help to give the band that added originality that should help them to go the extra mile and the musicianship is perfect throughout. In all honesty, there’s not a lot to say here – this is professional, addictive music.
