Humankind is actually genitically geared towards what we would call 'good'; being good to each other is a natural instinct built in us to help us survive and prosper. Religion is defunct, it can't even fall back on this old chestnut, and is nothing more than attempt by a sinking institution to cling onto some form of control and power. Sure, it may have helped and guided humanity in the dawns of time, but we have science now, and have proven rain comes from evaporation, not a magical man in the sky. Only the vulnerable need a god when they die. Religion feeds on this vulnerability, prevents it's people from thinking and learning, builds up intolerance of others for the benefit of it's leaders. Are you good because of God? Well get this. I'm good, and I don't believe in him. I'm not doing it to avoid a torturous afterlife, I'm doing it because it's right. If anything, religion is a Kubrick 'Clockwork Orange' merely forcing people to be 'good' through promise of glory or threat of pain after death. Religion is still ruining out world and now is the main stimulous behind two of the seemingly biggest threats to humankind; Al Qaeda and the Bush Administration.
