Since AT won't let me reply, I'll reply in track - The title is ifnluenced by Bill Bailey's disparetic style of comedy, (often jokes leading to beweildering nothingisms or just plain nonsense - indeed, despair itself would be tattered and strained (in itself despair is pointless and eventually nonsense/nothingness) so it was a toss between the two and 'tattered' seemed to fit more with the nonsensity of eventuality of despair.
