ARTIST The Psychedelic Underground

The Psychedelic Underground

The Psychedelic Underground is the work of Alex Langfield who uses electronics and effects to create his psychedelic soundscapes. Bringing together dance influences such as The Chemical Brothers and Orbital with bands like Spiritualized, Mercury Rev and The Secret Machines, TPU create a unique, ethereal, hard hitting and intelligent sound. Familiar to those in the Carlisle music scene and looking to break into the Birmingham scene The Psychedelic Underground has played alongside the likes of Let Airpanes Circle Overhead, Kasabian, Chikinki and The Heat. 2007 saw the iTunes release of the EP "Sagittarius", a seminal half an hours journey through psychedelic electronica. The second EP "Transmissions from the Sixth Star" expected within the next three months and representes a huge step forward in sound for The Psychedelic Underground, expect live dates to follow.

Influences: Having grown up to the sounds of Kraftwerk, The Prodigy and early nineties rave, The Psychedelic Underground always had an effinity to upbeat electronic music. The two acts that were to be the greatest influence however were The Chemical Brothers and Orbital, two acts whose influence can be heard throughout The Psychedelic Underground's backlog. Tracks like "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and "The Sunshine Underground" absolutely blew me away, and it's easy to see they have influenced not only the sound of but the name The Psychedelic Underground itself. However, it is not only electronica that has influenced the sound of the Underground. Bands such as Spiritualized, The Secret Machines, The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev have all been inspirational, particularly The Secret Machines' "Now Here is Nowhere" LP, an album which I think transcends there mere rock album. In short, The Psychedelic Underground is influenced by the acts and bands that try to create ethereal, timeless pieces of music.
